Credit card terminals connected to the Uzbek national payment system Humo now accept payments by Visa cards, Humo’s website has announced. The terminals were made compatible with the MasterCard network earlier this month.
“Visa card holders can now pay for goods and services at more than 176,000 Humo point-of-sale terminals around the country,” the company’s press release states. Merchants will be charged a 1% commission fee, and card holders 1.5%.
MasterCard Regional Director in Georgia and Central Asia Igor Stepanov hopes that the launch will meet with the support of retail and service companies across the whole of Uzbekistan.
“The development of a POS network has great importance for the promotion of cashless payments and the establishment of a modern payments ecosystem in Uzbekistan,” said Visa’s general manager in Central Asia Aliya Chynybayeva. She expressed confidence that the step will facilitate the development of business in the country “both for retail and service companies and for partner banks”.
Humo International card holders will in turn be able to pay for their purchases at all points of sale covered by these two major international systems.
Visa and MasterCard’s integration into the Uzbek national payment system will be a boon to foreign tourists, for whom cash withdrawals by card in the Uzbek capital have long posed a major headache, the constant quest for ATMs compatible with international payment systems having been a hallmark of travel in the country.
