At the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Council in Astana on November 28, a targeted intergovernmental program for the arrangement of the Tajik-Afghan border will be adopted. This was stated by CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov in an interview with the Belarusian television channel STV.
According to Tasmagambetov, the signing of the document will enable CSTO countries to jointly arrange this section of the border, thereby ensuring the security of Central Asia.
«The Afghan issue is one of the relevant areas of activity for the Collective Security Treaty Organization and is extremely important for Central Asia. Although the situation seems to have stabilized and is slowly moving toward peace, there are still plenty of terrorist organizations operating within Afghanistan,» noted the Secretary General.
He stated that the program project has already been agreed upon at the level of foreign ministries, defense ministries, and committees of security council secretaries within the CSTO. Tasmagambetov mentioned that the secretariat has managed to reach a consensus on adopting a program that was created 13 years ago.
The specifics of this consensus remain unknown. Additionally, details of the program are not fully clear. The website of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly only notes that the program is designed for five years and is divided into three phases. During the first phase, within one year, the Tajik side is expected to provide proposals for strengthening certain sections of the border, while participating states must determine material and other resources that can be allocated for securing Tajikistan's state border. This will be followed by the second and third phases, during which specific measures for arranging the border will be implemented.
