A launch ceremony for the 500 kV Datka-Sughd power transmission line was held on March 31 in the Tajik city of Khujand via video conference, according to Kyrgyzstan’s presidential press service.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, who was in Khujand on a working visit, attended the event. They emphasized the significance of the project, noting that the transmission line connects the two countries' power systems, enhances energy security, and contributes to the sustainable development of Central Asia.

Before the launch, the energy ministers of both nations reported the project's full readiness, after which the presidents jointly activated it using a demonstration lever.

ℹ️ The Datka-Sughd transmission line is part of the large-scale regional CASA-1000 project, designed to export surplus hydropower from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan during the summer months. The completion of the 480 km transmission line strengthens regional energy security, supports Central Asia’s sustainable development, and fosters good neighborly relations, according to Japarov’s press service.

As part of the project, Kyrgyzstan installed 1,243 transmission towers and constructed a 456 km power line passing through the Jalal-Abad, Osh, and Batken regions to the Tajik border. In Tajikistan, construction was completed on the 500 kV Sughd substation, which is now connected to Kyrgyzstan’s Datka substation.
